DMEG-1 — Diamond Magnetoencephalography

A room-temperature diamond-quantum sensing approach aimed at practical, scalable detection of brain signals— without cryogenic cooling.

Why MEG + why diamond

MEG is a non-invasive modality used to map brain activity and functional areas tied to memory, language, motor control, and sensory processing. It supports diagnosis/treatment planning across multiple neurological disorders.

A portable MEG system that operates under ambient conditions would be transformative. D-MEG uses NV centers in diamond at room temperature, enabling closer sensor placement and potentially denser arrays for improved spatial resolution and signal quality.

Prototype status

  • Phantom validation: initial D-MEG prototype tested on a custom phantom head with an internal electromagnet.
  • Small probe: includes a 10 mm × 10 mm probe that can be placed on a patient’s head.
  • Integration path: newer probe integrates laser, RF antenna, diamond, and collection hardware in a compact volume.
